SAMMY RIDGLEY
MIDNIGHT RENDEZVOUS
Brother of the late Tommy Ridgley, Sammy has been around since singing
gospel in his grandfather's church from an early age...'Party On The Bayou' which tops - and in instrumental
form - tails the set, is a lively little opus, racing along a pace and
certainly waking the listener's attention. 'Midnight Rendezvous' is more relaxed, easing along
at mid-tempo and 'Time Brings On A Change' sandwiches the tempo between the
two with a rather routine blues number, complete with the obligatory guitar
break. 'Once A Hearts Been Broken' takes a sway-along country road - no lack
of variety here - and we return to mid-paced soul on 'Good, Good Love'.
The flavour of this being a New Orleans recording shines through to the max on 'Mardi Gras
Chief', a highly derivative number - of what, irritatingly, escapes me!...
'I'm Not Your Fool' is a guitar led swayer which it's easy to imagine Sammy's brother singing.
Nevertheless, Sammy is still his own man and it should be mentioned that he gets proper musical
support throughout.
